History of Morebattle

The main street in Morebattle

Name - the name means the dwelling on the lake - 'mere' being a lake or loch, 'botl' or 'bodl' from the Anglian meaning a house or dwelling. There was a substantial loch between Morebattle and Linton which was drained as part of the nineteenth century agricultural improvements in the area.

Graveyard Record - The Morebattle Church Graveyard has been recorded by the Borders Family History Society in Roxburghshire Monumental Inscriptions Vol II. Hounam and Linton are recorded in Vol I.

Places of Interest

• Cessford Castle - formerly the main residence of Kers of Cessford. (NT 738238)
• Clifton Park - now abandoned - the former home of TRB Elliot who owned the first private motor car in Scotland - a 3½ horsepower Panhard which he imported from France in 1895.
• Corbet Tower - originally the seat of the Corbet family, this building which was devastated by the English during their many raids, was rebuilt by the Ker family. It later came into the hands of the Douglas family and the Goodsons. It is in the grounds of a private house, not open to the public. (NT 777239). Gardens are open under Scotland's Gardens Scheme on one day, annually.
