Hoselaw Chapel

The Tiny Chapel at Hoselaw

The tiny chapel at Hoselaw, just beside the loch, is a new building erected as a Memorial to Dr Thomas Leishman of Linton in 1905. There was a chapel on the site, first recorded in 1427, when it was on ground granted to Kelso Abbey by Lord Somerville. It was dedicated to Saint Machute. It became ruinous, and remained so until Dr Leishman, decided to find a suitable place for the farming community of the area to meet, and partake together in holy communion. He used a local cottage for his occasional service, and after his death the local community rebuilt the chapel in his memory. It is still in use today for occasional services, usually on the fifth Sunday of the month.

The graveyard, now lost, is reputed to be the burial place of Scots who died at Flodden and were returned to the nearest consecrated ground of their homeland for burial. This same, unproven, legend also applies to the old graveyard at Kirk Yetholm.
